Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. It occurs when your blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is too high. This can happen if your body doesn’t make enough insulin or if it can’t use the insulin it makes effectively. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy.

Types of Diabetes

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 need to take insulin every day.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin. This can often be managed with lifestyle changes, but medication or insulin may also be required.
  3. Gestational Diabetes: Develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth, but it can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
  4. Prediabetes: A condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Lifestyle changes can often prevent the progression to Type 2 diabetes.

Managing Diabetes

Proper management of diabetes is crucial to maintaining overall health and preventing complications. This includes regular monitoring of blood glucose levels, adhering to a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and taking any prescribed medications. Educating yourself about diabetes and its management can significantly improve your quality of life.
